Getting around Monticello
Parking
Visitor parking at Monticello is free. There are spaces for buses, RVs, and trailers. Handicapped parking spaces are located near the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center and Smith History Center (handicapped license plate or tag required). Visitors are advised to lock their vehicles. Monticello is not responsible for loss or damage incurred in the parking area. Overnight parking is prohibited. PLEASE NOTE: No bags or backpacks exceeding 11" by 15" by 6" are allowed beyond the Shuttle Station.
Shuttle Buses to and from the House and Mountaintop
After purchasing tickets, visitors are transported to the mountaintop on 25-passenger shuttle buses and dropped off near Monticello’s East Walk. The stop is also the pick-up point for return trips to the visitor center and parking area. On the return trips the buses pass Jefferson’s gravesite but do not stop there. Visitors must be seated while riding the shuttle buses. Smoking is prohibited.
Hiking Trail
Many visitors enjoy walking the relatively short distance (roughly half a mile) from the parking lot to the home. Tickets are required for anyone who walks up the trail.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located in various places at the visitor center and under the South Terrace of the main house.
